It seems to be a new fad on facebook to go around and find facebook pages that are very popular or appear nice and then copy them. They take the name and maybe even some of the content/images/text and use it on their copycat facebook page. Facebook used to have the option to report the page as impersonating you or someone you know. They have since removed that option from pages.Thats very sad because there is no way to protect you intelectual property in any way on Facebook..
My page MAFIA WARS OFFICERS was created in May 2009 and it was meant to be a page for Mafia Wars ( A third party facebook application developed from Zynga ), as a page which will serve to facebook users to post their “ADD†to be added from others because it is necessary to have at least 501 friends who play the Mafia Wars Game so you can play it comfortable without restrictions. The page was also used for sharing Game sips, strategy, as a place where players will meet and help each other and also for trading mafia wars items..
Few days after the launch, the page became very popular and the membership was growing very fast, new members were coming in every minute and even second, everyone loved that page, that was the primary landing page for all mafia wars players worldwide for a long time..
However only a day or two after I created that page and after it started growing in thousands of members I accidentally made a quick search on facebook with the page name and I found two copycats already with the same name, same description, same picture and everything else same like my page.. I was flattened !!
I contacted the creator of the fake page and asked him why he did that, why he had to copy my page.. I even offered him help for a new page or unique idea for page different from mine, whatever he need about it, just to give from up from the page which was copy of mine..
Never Got Any Response From Him!!
After few days and weeks I saw over 20 – 30 or maybe more copies of my page.. some were same identic copies and some little modified.. I had to report them all to facebook and I was hoping that they will take actions but they didn’t…
Personally I think that there is no reason to copy a page or something that have been created from someone else.. It does not make any sense to me..
But what bothers me is mostly is why Facebook never takes actions when they need to ? Like in this case when ones intellectual property is infringed, or somebodies private life is brought to an edge because someone else have posted an intimate photo or video of him without approval and facebook never takes actions in those cases, while in the other hand they close many facebook users accounts because they have sent 5 or 10 friend requests at once or because they have made too much status comments.. This injustice will never end.. I just hope for the BEST.
